5A- Identifying Local Opportunities  
1. "Irma was a teachable moment for Miami-Dade. Have we learned its lessons?" by Andres Viglucci, writer for the Miami Herald 
Summary 
The author talks about some of the problems in Miami electrical infrastructure that Irma exposed, and had it hit Miami Dade directly how much more severe it could have gotten.  
The Problems 
There was loss of power for up to 10 days in some areas of Miami, and the storm had only reach tropical storm wind gusts. Had it hit Miami directly like it originally predicted, the severity of the power outages would have lasted weeks. 
The People Affected 
The residents of Miami who lost power during hurricane Irma. 

2. "County schools propose Irma makeup days" by Deborah Strange, writer for the Gainesville Sun 
Summary 
The article talks about the school boards upcoming vote to revise the schedule for Alachua County public schools due to the 6 days missed during Hurricane Irma. 2 of the 6 days have officially been waived, while the Oct. 3 vote will address the remaining 4 days. 
The Problems 
The 6 days missed due to Hurricane Irma has caused a lot of trouble to teachers and their planned teaching schedule.  
The People Affected 
Teachers who have had to revise their teaching plans and students in those classes. 

3.  "U.S.-Cuba commission meets for first time during Trump administration" by Mimi Whitefield, writer for the Miami Herald 
Summary 
The article goes into detail about the sixth Bilateral Commission meeting, the first with Trump as president, and the implications it has on trade and travel between the two countries. 
The Problem 
Tensions between Cuba and the U.S. are starting to rise with the treat of new sanctions. Making business with Cuba even more complicated. 
The People Affected 
People who are doing business with Cuba, because more sanctions would limit any products they can buy or sell from Cuba. Also, anybody who wants to visit the country could be affected if the embargo is returned. 

4. "10,000 people in Keys left homeless by Hurricane Irma, governor says" by Katie Atkins, writer for the Miami Herald 
Summary 
The article talks about the 10,000 people without homes in the keys and what the State of Florida is doing to quickly get the keys up and running again. 
The Problem 
Massive amounts of damage caused to the lower keys has left thousands of people homeless. 
The People Affected 
All the residents who lost their homes and anybody living in the keys who either doesn't have power or took substantial damage to their house or business.  
5. "Gas prices hit a three-year high in Florida" by Marc R. Masferrer, writer for the Miami Herald 
Summary 
Gas prices have soared in price due to Hurricane Irma, highest since 2014. Gas prices have ranged from $2.62 to $2.80 all over Florida. 
The Problem 
It does not help Florida residents who already had a lot of expenses due to Hurricane Irma who now have to spend more on gas for the next couple of weeks. 
The People Affected 
Anybody getting gas in Florida.
