13A – Reading Reflection No. 1

Steve Jobs, by Walter Isaacson

1) What surprised me the most was how he treated his employees when they did not live up to his expectations. I most admired his ability to see a vision of a product, and go out and fulfill his vision. I least admired how he treated some of his employees or the people working with him, because he could easily be difficult to work with and also blow up on the person belittling them. Steve Jobs was kicked out of apple and he went on to find success outside of apple through Pixar and other projects.

2) His core competency was that he was a visionary. In order to achieve his visions he was a perfectionist, every detail needed to be perfect and he never took short cuts on anything. He also was a showman, he had an ability to take ideas and get people to understand his vision through presentations.

3) The parts of the reading that confused me the most was a lot of the tech stuff the book was talking about early on in the book, especially about the Macintosh and Apple 1 computer.

4) I would like to ask Steve Jobs "Was there ever a dream project that you wanted to work on but couldn't". I personally want to know more about his insane visions for products. Also "looking back would you do anything differently" because for very great thing Jobs has done there has been a lot of bad things and I'm curious if there is anything he would do differently.

5) I think Steve Jobs was a hard worker because he had this need to have control over every decision for each one of his projects. I do share his need to have a decision in everything.

  1. I also did my reading reflection on Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson. Prior to reading the book, I had heard that Steve Jobs did not treat his employees with respect and was often very mean and rude to them when he was not satisfied with their work, but I too was surprised to the extent of his negative treatment towards employees. I enjoyed your idea for the questions that you would ask Steve Jobs and would also like to know the answers to those questions.

  2. I think that both of our entrepreneurs were very similar. I did Elon Musk, and it seems like they both had an enormous amount in common. I think that by the end of this assignment, it was obvious to me that any of the options we had would probably seem like they had a lot in common, and thats why we did the assignment.
